Christian Siriano's Fall 2013 Echoes Russian Royalty
Forget the fat lady. For Christian Siriano's Opera-inspired Fall 2013 NYFW presentation (February 9), the show wasn't over until the last model walked the runway, and she … was … stunning.
We were in on the action for the 27-year-old designer's runway show, which was inspired by the "golden age of the Russian Opera."
"The lavish interiors of Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater inspired [me] to begin work on this glamorous and opulent collection," says Siriano. "[One filled with] sophisticated shapes, gilded and embossed fabrications, and deep jewel-toned colors."
We fell in love with the collections regal offerings, which included finely tailored blazers, sophisticated cocktail dresses, and red-carpet-ready gowns.
We caught up with MAC makeup artist, Polly Osmond, backstage to see how she captured the show's royal inspiration. "[Christian] wanted the girls to look very strong. So, we did a very dark eye using MAC eyeliner in Smolder and Black Dragon."
Contouring played a huge role in the girls' final look, and Osmond says to achieve the perfect chiseled look, try "sucking in your cheeks" and tracing a product that's "not too grey [or] orange" along your cheek bones. She also stressed, "Always blend [the product] into the foundation so it doesn't look too line-y."
The fishtail, a very popular 'do of the moment, paraded down the catwalk thanks to the styling talents of Antoinette Beenders, Aveda's Global Creative Director. She folded along both sides of the models' faces, creating two separate braids. Each one was then looped to the opposite side of their heads and pinned into place. Beenders described the look as, "Very feminine and romantic, yet quite opulent."
